Plaque restricts arterial blood flow, causing pain in the calf or thigh. This pain can make walking difficult.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Peripheral arterial disease is most commonly caused by fatty material in the arteries. Less common causes include injuries, radiation, or blood vessel inflammation(2).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PAD affects more than 200 million adults worldwide(1). Some risk factors for PAD include(3):<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ethnicity<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diabetes<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Obesity<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Smoking<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hypertension<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increased age<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Family history of PAD, heart disease, or stroke<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">High blood levels of homocysteine<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">High cholesterol levels<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Signs_and_Symptoms_of_Peripheral_Arterial_Disease\"><\/span><b>Signs and Symptoms of Peripheral Arterial Disease<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-9396\" src=\"https:\/\/amsvein.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/81-300x169.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"618\" height=\"348\" \/><br \/>\n<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have PAD, you might experience pain in the lower legs that worsens while walking. Your legs may also feel crampy, heavy, or tired.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Patients with mild to moderate PAD may have little to no symptoms. This depends on where in the leg the PAD has occurred (if in a major artery or a minor one) or how active the patient is.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Patients with severe peripheral arterial disease may experience pain even while resting or not be able to heal a toe or foot wound. Patients with severe pain usually relieve their symptoms by dangling their legs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other side effects include paleness, a decrease in muscle, hair loss, or cool skin,<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Peripheral_Arterial_Disease_Diagnosis\"><\/span><b>Peripheral Arterial Disease Diagnosis<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To diagnose PAD, your doctor will perform a physical exam. They will take your blood pressure above your ankle and on both arms. (This is an ankle-brachial index, or ABI.) They may also perform ultrasound exams to locate the site of the artery issues and its severity.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Treatments_for_Peripheral_Arterial_Disease\"><\/span><b>Treatments for Peripheral Arterial Disease<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Patients with PAD should focus on lifestyle and mobility improvement. Doctors recommend exercise and a diet low in cholesterol and to avoid smoking. It is also important to manage certain conditions simultaneously, like diabetes or hypertension. This can help improve PAD symptoms(5).\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your doctor may also prescribe medications like cilostazol to improve circulation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Catheter based outpatient angiographic endovascular procedures may be recommended to \u201cclear\u201d the leg artery blockages.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_is_Chronic_Venous_Insufficiency_CVI\"><\/span><b>What is Chronic Venous Insufficiency (CVI)?<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chronic venous insufficiency is a disease that causes edema in the lower legs, skin changes, and discomfort. This backward flow stems from a weakened, expanded, or oddly shaped valve. In almost all cases, CVI leads to venous hypertension.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Patients may experience pain, swelling, and even hyperpigmentation. They may also experience lipodermatosclerosis: when the skin thickens due to fat fibrosis. And, as the skin continues to weaken, ulcers may form.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Signs_and_Symptoms_of_Chronic_Venous_Insufficiency\"><\/span><b>Signs and Symptoms of Chronic Venous Insufficiency<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Patients with CVI may experience lower leg swelling, discomfort, pain, fatigue, and itching. Some may complain of cramping or throbbing feeling relieved by resting or elevating their legs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unlike peripheral arterial disease, this pain is not associated with any activity.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Chronic_Venous_Insufficiency_Diagnosis\"><\/span><b>Chronic Venous Insufficiency Diagnosis<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To diagnose CVI, your doctor will review your medical history and they will also perform a physical exam.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A duplex ultrasound of your leg veins can help identify affected regions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Treatment_for_Chronic_Venous_Insufficiency\"><\/span><b>Treatment for Chronic Venous Insufficiency<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Patients with chronic venous insufficiency are treated based on disease severity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Treatments for CVI aim to:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reduce leg discomfort or pain<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reduce swelling<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Treat painful varicose veins\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heal ulcers and avoid infection<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In early stages, patients may regularly elevate their legs, do calf exercises, and wear compression stockings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ulcers are treated with compression dressings and bandages. Compression bandages should be used with caution if PAD coexists.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Patients with superficial vein reflux may benefit from Radiofrequency Ablation (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">RFA,) Varithena or Microphlebectomy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Compression therapy is highly effective for managing CVI if a patient keeps at it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Differences_Between_PAD_and_CVI\"><\/span><b>The Differences Between PAD and CVI<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Peripheral arterial disease and chronic venous insufficiency may seem similar. However, there are key differences between these two diseases.
